Defensive Assistant Football Coach (Second Sport Required)

Position Summary  

Austin LBJ High School is seeking a committed defensive assistant football coach and classroom teacher to join our staff. The ideal candidate is a teacher first, coach second: strong in English or Math instruction, passionate about defense, and able to coach a second sport based on campus needs. SPED certification or experience is strongly preferred.

 Key Responsibilities  

Football – Defensive Assistant  

1. Assist the Defensive Coordinator in installing and teaching the defensive system (fronts, coverages, pressure packages, situational football).  

2. Coach a defensive position group (e.g., DL, LB, DB) with clear techniques, drills, and progressions.  

3. Break down film (Hudl or similar), create scouting reports, and contribute to weekly game plans.  

4. Run or assist with individual periods, group periods, and scout teams in practice.  

5. Help track and evaluate player performance; provide honest, constructive feedback to athletes.  

6. Support off‑season strength, conditioning, and skills development, including summer workouts and 7‑on‑7 (if applicable).  

7. Model and teach discipline, accountability, and competitive toughness consistent with Austin LBJ’s standards.  

Second Sport Coaching (Required)  

1. Coach a second UIL sport (e.g., basketball, track & field, soccer, baseball, etc.), based on campus/athletic department needs.  

2. Plan and conduct in‑season and off‑season practices that emphasize skill development, team concepts, and safe participation.  

3. Assist with game management, scouting, equipment, and communication for the second sport.  

4. Promote multi‑sport participation and coordinate training loads with other sport coaches.

Teaching Duties  

1. Teach assigned English or Math courses (and/or SPED, if certified) in alignment with TEKS and district curriculum.  

2. Develop and deliver engaging daily lessons that support diverse learners and build foundational skills.  

3. Implement effective classroom management and maintain a safe, respectful learning environment.  

4. Monitor student academic progress, provide interventions, and communicate regularly with parents/guardians.  

5. Collaborate with grade‑level/content teams and attend required campus/district professional learning.  

Program, Culture & Administration  

1. Uphold and model the academic, behavioral, and athletic expectations of Austin LBJ and Austin ISD.  

2. Build positive relationships with student‑athletes, families, faculty, and the community.  

3. Assist with logistics: equipment, inventory, travel, fundraisers, and events as assigned.  

4. Support compliance with UIL, district, and campus athletic policies and procedures.  

5. Participate in staff meetings, off‑season planning, and program development.

 Minimum Qualifications  

- Valid Texas teaching certificate in English or Mathematics (or eligibility for appropriate certification by hire date).  

- Ability and willingness to coach football plus a second UIL sport.  

- Prior coaching experience at the high school, middle school, or higher level (student‑teaching, GA, or youth with strong background considered).  

- Strong communication, organization, and time‑management skills.  

- Commitment to the academic success, character development, and safety of all student‑athletes.

 Preferred Qualifications  

- Texas SPED certification or significant experience working with students receiving special education services.  

- Experience coaching high school football defense (position coach or above), with film breakdown and game‑planning responsibilities.  

- Experience with second sport coaching at the high school level.  

- Familiarity with Hudl or comparable video/scouting systems and digital gradebook tools.  

- Evidence of building competitive, high‑character programs that represent their school well.

Work Schedule & Expectations  

- Full‑time teaching position plus coaching stipends.  

- After‑school, evening, and weekend responsibilities during the season and portions of the off‑season.  

- Summer workouts, camps, and approved off‑season activities as assigned.  

- Attendance at practices, games, film, meetings, and professional development is required.

 Compensation  

- Salary in accordance with Austin ISD teacher salary schedule plus applicable coaching stipends for football and second sport.  

- Exact stipend information provided by the district/athletic department.
