Job Description

Mobile, Alabama, The University of South Alabama’s department of Athletic Media Relations is seeking to hire an Associate Athletic Director, Communications and Strategy. Job duties required of the position: Maintains responsibility for all aspects of strategic communication both internally and externally, which includes the development, execution, and management of department-wide communication and media relations plans and strategies. Oversees the Creative Services unit and supervises full-time staff and students in this area. Creates and distributes content that tells the story of the department, our student-athletes, coaches, staff, fans, and alumni in such a way that helps elevate the profile and brand of South Alabama Athletics and the University of South Alabama. Oversees and coordinates game-day and press box operations for home contests including game statistics, media relations, opponent relations, and applicable staff. Serves as primary media contact for Jaguar Football and other sports as necessary. Produces regular press releases such as game previews, recaps, and other important feature articles. Oversees maintenance of the athletics website for assigned sports, including but not limited to: posting/updating team schedules, rosters, student-athlete/staff bios, and keeping historical record books up to date. Develops and maintains strong relationships with local, regional, and national media and coordinates interview requests. Develops and executes a cohesive social media strategy. Uses social media strategy effectively. Manages the Strategic Communications budget. Partners as needed with the University’s Office of Marketing & Communications on athletics-related news stories and events. Coordinates submission of appropriate NCAA and Sun Belt Conference awards. Provides administrative oversight to both the Athletics Hall of Fame, and the Retired Jerseys/Numbers Committees. Ensures compliance with all applicable NCAA, Sun Belt Conference, and University rules and regulations. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary. Ability to travel with assigned teams. Regular and prompt attendance. Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required, including nights and weekends. Related duties as required. Bachelor’s degree in sports management, communications, public relations, journalism or a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and six years of professional experience in athletics communications or media relations in a collegiate athletics setting. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Master's degree preferred.
