Dayton, Ohio, Job Purposes:
The Assistant Athletics Director for Communications serves as the Sports Information Director (SID) for Wright State University Athletics – the institutional record-keeper, media relations lead, and statistical authority for the department’s NCAA Division I athletic programs.
This is a department head role. The person hired will build, manage, and be accountable for the communications function at Wright State: media relations, statistical infrastructure, digital content, game day operations, awards and recognition, and the development of the next generation of athletics communicators through a structured student worker pipeline.
Essential Functions and percent of time:
40% – MEDIA RELATIONS d national outlets.
Write and edit news releases, game recaps, game notes/previews, and feature content to publicize Raider Athletics.
Disseminate game results via official website, social media, and other methods as needed.
Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with local, regional, and national sports media.
Coordinate all operations during games, including assignment of seating for writers, statisticians, radio, television, photographers and scouts; and enforce post-game interview policies.
Coordinate efforts designed to promote teams, coaches, and players to media sources at the local, regional, and national levels.
Nominate student-athletes and coaches for conference, regional, and national awards.
Respond to media inquiries accurately and in a timely manner, in coordination with Athletics leadership.
Serve as the department’s primary liaison to the Horizon League communications office and NCAA media relations infrastructure.
Coordinate media days, press conferences, conference championship hosting, and other media relations events.
20% – STATISTICAL MANAGEMENT & RECORDS
Produce accurate, complete, and professionally formatted game notes for all assigned sports prior to each competition.
Manage live statistical reporting during home events using NCAA-standard statistical software (StatCrew, Genius Sports, or equivalent).
Maintain current and historical statistical records for all Wright State athletic programs in compliance with NCAA and Horizon League standards.
Submit official statistics to the NCAA, Horizon League, and relevant national services within required deadlines.
Coordinate with visiting institutions and conference offices to ensure accuracy of all reported data.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, statistics, and results of teams, players, and coaches.
15% – DEPARTMENT LEADERSHIP & STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Train, supervise, and evaluate one full-time Communications staff member.
Recruit, build, and manage a structured student worker and graduate assistant program (8–10 personnel) with the explicit goal of developing professionals for careers in college and professional athletics.
Set operational standards, workflow expectations, and coverage responsibilities for all communications staff and student workers.
Supervise statistical crews and other event support personnel.
Represent Wright State Athletics externally through active CoSIDA participation, Horizon League committee engagement, and professional development activities that elevate the department’s national profile.
Establish effective interpersonal relationships with coaches, players, administrators, students, and the public.

10% – DIGITAL AND PRINT CONTENT & WEB MANAGEMENT
Write, edit, and design pertinent Athletics Department publications for assigned sports. Publications include media guides, game programs, etc. for assigned sports.
Serve as the primary manager of wsuraiders.com, including acting as primary liaison with WSU’s web provider.
Write and publish game recaps, season previews, and feature content for the official Athletics website.
Maintain a comprehensive digital and physical archive of Wright State Athletics history, records, and milestones.
Ensure all athlete and coaching staff bios, roster pages, and schedule information are current, accurate, and consistent with institutional standards.
Write, edit, and design pertinent Athletics Department publications for assigned sports, including media guides and game programs.
5% – AWARD & RECOGNITION COORDINATION
Manage the nomination and submission process for individual and team awards at the conference, regional, and national levels.
Track award eligibility windows, submission deadlines, and selection criteria across all sports.
5% – TV / RADIO / STREAMING LIAISON
Act as the primary liaison with broadcasting partners, including contract oversight coordination with Athletics administration.
Coordinate streaming efforts with key external and internal stakeholders.
5% – OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Support Athletics administration, event operations, and institutional initiatives as directed by the Deputy Athletic Director for Partnerships & Engagement Required:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, sports management, or a related field.
3+ years of progressive experience in collegiate athletics communications or sports information, with demonstrated experience managing a communications operation.
Proficiency with NCAA -standard statistical software (StatCrew, Genius Sports, or equivalent) and content management systems.
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously in a high-volume, event-driven environment.
Must work well individually and in a team environment.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and desktop publishing tools.
Preferred:
Master’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a directly related field.
Experience as the primary SID or lead communications contact at the NCAA Division I level.
Active CoSIDA membership and demonstrated engagement with the national college athletics communications community.
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite.
