Varsity Assistant Football Coach - Defensive Line (Second sport required)

Job Description

Position Overview  

Mesquite Horn High School is seeking a **Varsity Assistant Football Coach – Defensive Line** who will also coach a **second sport**. The ideal candidate is a teacher-coach committed to developing disciplined, physical defensive line play and investing in student-athletes’ growth on and off the field.

 

Sports Assignment  

- Primary: Varsity Football – Defensive Line

- Secondary: **Assigned second sport** based on campus/athletic department needs (examples: basketball, track, powerlifting, etc.)

 

### Teaching Fields Available  

Certified teachers are needed in the following areas:

 

- Science  

- Math  

- Spanish  

- Speech  

- English  

 

(Additional teaching certifications may be considered based on campus needs.)

 

### Key Football Responsibilities  

- Coach the **defensive line** at the varsity level; assist with sub-varsity as needed  

- Teach **fundamentals of DL play**: stance, get-off, block destruction, pass rush, run fits, and pursuit  

- Assist with **defensive game planning**, including film breakdown, opponent scouting, and weekly adjustments  

- Use **Hudl or similar platforms** to evaluate players, self-scout, and prepare scouting reports  

- Support **off-season strength & conditioning** and summer development programs  

- Help with **practice planning**, drill organization, and position-group meetings  

- Emphasize **technique, effort, and discipline** consistent with Mesquite Horn and Mesquite ISD standards  

- Communicate effectively with the **defensive coordinator, head coach, and entire defensive staff**

 

### Second Sport Responsibilities  

- Assist the head coach of the assigned second sport with:  

  - Daily practice organization and skill development  

  - Game management and scouting  

  - Player development and team culture  

- Support **multi-sport participation** and collaboration between coaching staffs

 

### Classroom Responsibilities  

- Provide effective, engaging instruction in assigned teaching field  

- Maintain a structured, positive classroom that supports **learning and behavior expectations**  

- Monitor academic progress and eligibility of student-athletes  

- Communicate consistently with students, parents, and colleagues

 

### Qualifications  

- Valid **Texas teaching certificate** (or eligibility) in one of the needed content areas:  

  - Science, Math, Spanish, Speech, or English  

- Prior coaching experience in **defensive line play** at the high school, college, or competitive youth level preferred  

- Strong knowledge of **defensive fundamentals, fronts, and techniques**  

- Ability to coach a **second sport** and contribute to a multi-sport athletic department  

- Familiarity with **UIL rules and compliance**
