Job Description

Elmira, New York, Essential Duties: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Represents the College honestly and abides by the college’s and Sports Medicine protocols and procedures. Keeps updated and abides by Federal, State, and County laws as they pertain to athletic trainers. Also keeps updated and abides by the recommendations and guidelines put forth by the NCAA and NATA (National Athletic Trainers’ Association). Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in the administrative duties of the Sports Medicine program, including budget management, inventory management, training room maintenance, and ensuring Sports Medicine protocols and procedures are being followed. Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in coordinating and implementing pre-participation physical screenings, baseline testing, drug education, and related initiatives. Assists coaches in developing and maintaining effective physical conditioning programs designed to improve strength and endurance. Represents Elmira College at various events including Hall of Fame events, Athletics Alumni Weekend, Purple & Gold Golf Outing, alumni events, and related functions. Maintains confidentiality of information encountered in the course of business regarding student-athlete medical and injury documentation, and provides accident and insurance forms to the business office for insurance purposes. Communicates with team orthopedic surgeons, Clarke Health Center physicians and nurses, and other area physicians and dentists regarding athletes’ injury status and progress. Communicates with coaches regarding athletes’ progress and Sports Medicine issues that may affect their teams. Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in the development of Sports Medicine policies, procedures, and protocols that align with NCAA, NATA, Team Physician, and Elmira College guidelines, as well as Federal and New York State laws. Assists the Head Athletic Trainer and Team Physician in coordinating and implementing the Concussion Management Program. Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in coordinating, updating, and presenting NCAA-mandated Drug Education and Sports Medicine informational programs for student-athletes. Covers scheduled team practices and competitions as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer. Travels with teams as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer. Designs and monitors treatment and rehabilitation programs for injured athletes. Provides pre-participation taping, padding, strapping, stretching, and related athlete care services. Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in CPR and First Aid instruction for athletic department staff, members of the college community, students, supervisors, and other staff. Performs other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director and/or the Head Athletic Trainer. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred Certified as an Athletic Trainer by the NATABOC Excellent written and oral communication skills required. Ability to effectively communicate both within and outside the College including, but not limited to, student athletes, parents, recruits, coaches, civic and business leaders required Ability to work as a support individual within a group setting Ability to provide effective leadership to student athletes and Sports Medicine Student Assistants to encourage both successful academic development and competitive performance Must possess the physical skills necessary to perform their assigned duties A valid driver’s license Current certification in CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer or BLS Certified as an American Red Cross CPR and First Aid instructor (preferred)
