Defensive Backs Coach

Position Summary:
The Defensive Backs Coach is responsible for developing and coaching the secondary unit (cornerbacks and safeties) within the football program. This includes teaching fundamental skills, implementing defensive schemes, and fostering discipline, teamwork, and character among student-athletes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coach and develop defensive backs in techniques such as coverage, footwork, tackling, and ball skills
  • Teach and implement defensive schemes, including man coverage, zone coverage, and situational responsibilities
  • Break down game and practice film to evaluate player performance and prepare for opponents
  • Assist the Defensive Coordinator in game planning and adjustments
  • Conduct individual and group drills to improve skill development
  • Monitor academic progress and promote accountability among student-athletes
  • Ensure player safety by teaching proper techniques and enforcing safety protocols
  • Support strength and conditioning programs in coordination with staff
  • Assist with equipment management and practice organization
  • Maintain positive communication with players, parents, and school staff
  • Uphold school, district, and athletic program policies and expectations

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of football fundamentals, especially defensive back play
  • Previous playing and/or coaching experience preferred
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to mentor and motivate high school student-athletes
  • Commitment to academic and character development

Teaching Field Requirements:

  • Valid state teaching certification required
  • Preferred teaching fields include:
    • Social Studies / History
    • Physical Education / Kinesiology
    • Health
    • Special Education (SPED)
  • Must meet all district and state requirements for highly qualified teachers
  • Ability to integrate classroom success with athletic participation expectations
  • Willingness to support campus initiatives and collaborate with academic staff

Work Environment:

  • Requires after-school practices, evening games, and occasional weekend commitments
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
