Job Title: Defensive Line Coach - Hempstead ISD High School Football (Bobcats)
Reports to: Head Football Coach; Defensive Coordinator; Athletic Director
Position Summary: Coach, develop, and mentor the defensive line unit to build technically sound, disciplined, and physically prepared players who contribute to team success, academic achievement, and personal growth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach defensive line fundamentals: stance, footwork, hand placement, pad level, shedding blocks, gap integrity, pass-rush moves, and pursuit.
- Plan and run position-specific drills, practice segments, and meetings; create weekly practice plans in coordination with the defensive coordinator.
- Develop individualized improvement plans for players, including strength/conditioning goals, film study assignments, and skill progressions.
- Scout opponent offensive line tendencies and provide position-specific scouting reports and game-plan recommendations.
- Coach during games, including play assignments for DL, in-game adjustments, and on-field coaching between series.
- Monitor player safety, technique to reduce injury risk, and adherence to concussion/heat/UIL safety protocols.
- Support academic eligibility, discipline, and character development; communicate with parents/guardians as needed.
- Assist with special teams assignments when applicable and participate in offseason programs, camps, and youth outreach.
- Assign and supervise assistant/volunteer/student coaches working with the defensive line.
- Ensure compliance with Hempstead ISD and UIL policies, district expectations, and required certifications.
Qualifications: Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Teachers Certificate
- Experience coaching defensive line at the high school level (or demonstrable football coaching experience).
- Strong technical knowledge of defensive line play, teaching ability, and communication skills.
- Ability to work evenings/weekends and travel for games.
- Successful completion of criminal background check and district hiring requirements.
Preferred:
- Valid Texas teaching certificate or coaching certification.
- Experience developing college-bound athletes or multiple varsity-level contributors.
- First Aid/CPR and concussion training (or willingness to obtain).
- Familiarity with film-analysis tools and strength & conditioning principles.
Performance Expectations:
- Measurable improvement in defensive line performance (tackles for loss, sacks, quarterback pressures, run-stopping efficiency).
- Player development evidenced by technique, playing time depth, and academic/behavioral standards.
- Positive, safety-focused, and accountable position-room culture aligned with Hempstead ISD values.
Terms:
- Seasonal coaching stipend or salary per Hempstead ISD pay schedule; position may be combined with a teaching assignment per district needs.
- Employment contingent on required paperwork, background check, and certifications.
