Job Title: Special Teams Coordinator - Hempstead ISD High School Football (Bobcats)
Reports to: Head Football Coach; Athletic Director
Position Summary: Plan, lead, and manage all aspects of the special teams program for Hempstead Bobcats. Build technically sound, disciplined units that maximize field position, scoring opportunities, and player safety while supporting academic accountability and character development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, install, and teach kickoff, kickoff return, punt, punt return, field goal, and extra-point units and situational special-teams packages.
- Call special-teams plays during games and make in-game adjustments in coordination with the head coach.
- Coach and develop players for all special-teams roles, including kickers, punters, long snappers, returners, gunners, and blockers; prepare individualized development plans.
- Scout opponent special-teams tendencies, analyze film, and produce reports to inform game plans.
- Oversee practice planning and drills focused on technique, alignment, timing, blocking, tackling, ball security, and situational awareness.
- Coordinate with head coach, defensive and offensive coordinators, strength & conditioning staff, and athletic trainers on player usage, conditioning, and injury prevention.
- Assign and supervise assistant coaches and student coaches working with special teams.
- Enforce team rules, academic eligibility, and school/district policies; maintain clear communication with parents/guardians.
- Ensure compliance with UIL and Hempstead ISD safety protocols and required certifications (concussion protocols, heat/acclimation guidelines, etc.).
- Lead or participate in offseason special-teams camps, walkthroughs, and community outreach events.
Qualifications: Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Teachers Certificate
- Demonstrated knowledge of special-teams techniques, fundamentals, and strategy; prior high school coaching experience preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and teaching skills.
- Ability to work evenings/weekends and travel for games.
- Successful completion of criminal background check and district hiring requirements.
Preferred:
- Valid Texas teaching certificate or coaching certification.
- Experience coaching kickers, punters, long snappers, or returning units.
- First Aid/CPR and concussion training (or willingness to obtain).
- Familiarity with film-analysis software and modern special-teams scheming.
Performance Expectations:
- Improve special-teams performance indicators (net punting, kickoff/return averages, field-goal percentage, blocked kicks, opponent starting field position) year-over-year.
- Maintain player academic eligibility and positive conduct; promote a culture of accountability and safety.
- Develop reliable specialists and depth across special-teams roles.
Terms:
- Seasonal coaching stipend or salary per Hempstead ISD pay schedule; may be combined with a teaching assignment based on district needs.
- Employment contingent on completion of required paperwork, background check, and certifications.
