Job Title: Defensive Coordinator  - Hempstead ISD High School Football (Bobcats)

Reports to: Head Football Coach; Athletic Director

Position Summary: Lead the development, planning, and execution of the high school football defensive program for Hempstead Bobcats. Build a disciplined, fundamentally-sound unit that emphasizes player development, sportsmanship, academic accountability, and readiness for college, career, or military paths.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and adjust defensive game plans and play-calling during contests.
  • Teach defensive fundamentals, techniques, schemes, and situational awareness in practices and meetings.
  • Coach and mentor defensive position groups (e.g., DL, LB, DB), including individualized player development plans.
  • Scout opponents, analyze game film, and produce scouting reports for the head coach and staff.
  • Collaborate with head coach and offensive staff on overall team strategy, special teams, and practice planning.
  • Lead defensive staff meetings; assign and supervise assistant coaches and student coaches as directed.
  • Monitor and enforce team rules, academic eligibility, and behavioral standards; communicate with parents/guardians as needed.
  • Support strength & conditioning and injury-prevention protocols in coordination with trainers.
  • Ensure compliance with UIL, district, and school policies, including safety, attendance at mandatory meetings, and required certifications.
  • Participate in summer camps, offseason workouts, youth outreach, and community engagement activities.

Qualifications: Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Teacher Certification in a qualified subject area
  • Demonstrated knowledge of football defensive strategies and experience coaching at the high school level.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work evenings/weekends and travel for games.
  • Pass criminal background check and meet district hiring requirements.

Preferred:

  • Valid Texas teaching certificate or coaching certification.
  • Previous experience as a defensive coordinator or position coach.
  • First Aid/CPR and concussion training (or willingness to obtain).
  • Familiarity with film-analysis software and modern defensive schemes.

Performance Expectations:

  • Improve defensive performance metrics (points allowed, turnovers, third-down stops) year-over-year.
  • Maintain high standards for player academic eligibility and conduct.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive team culture consistent with Hempstead ISD values.

Terms:

  • Seasonal coaching stipend or salary per Hempstead ISD pay schedule; position may be combined with a teaching assignment subject to district needs.
  • Employment contingent on completion of required paperwork, background check, and certifications.
