Head Boys Basketball

At Vernon ISD, we are seeking a highly motivated and energetic Head Basketball coach to lead our program. The Head Boys Basketball Coach directs all aspects of the basketball program, providing leadership in coaching, program management, and student-athlete development. This role emphasizes building a positive, disciplined team culture, ensuring academic eligibility, and maintaining compliance with all applicable district, UIL, and Vernon ISD rules.

Core Responsibilities

• Coaching & Instruction: Plan, organize, and conduct daily practices and game preparations that develop individual skills, team strategy, and competitive performance.

• Program Management: Oversee all levels of the basketball program; supervise assistant coaches, coordinate team travel, and manage practice and competition schedules.

• Student-Athlete Development: Monitor and support academic progress, promote sportsmanship and character development, and maintain a safe, disciplined team environment.

• Administration & Compliance: Ensure adherence to league, UIL, and institutional regulations; maintain accurate records for eligibility, attendance, and incident reports.

• Recruitment & Retention: Identify and recruit prospective student-athletes (as appropriate for the institution’s level), organize camps or clinics, and implement retention strategies to support athlete development.

• Equipment & Facility Coordination: Work with the athletic director to schedule facility use, manage uniforms and equipment inventory, and oversee necessary purchases and maintenance.

• Community & Public Relations: Represent the program to parents, media, and the broader community; communicate effectively about team activities, expectations, and accomplishments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Coaching experience at the relevant level (high school or college) with a demonstrated record of athlete development and program leadership.

• Strong knowledge of basketball strategy, conditioning, and skill development.

• Familiarity with applicable league and institutional compliance requirements.

• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

• Valid teaching certification, CDL
