Azle ISD Sports Medicine Specialist

A.      Report to Director of Athletics

B.      The Sports Medicine Specialist will coordinate coverage, treatment, rehabilitation and physician referrals for all athletic and designated UIL programs.

C.      Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administers and oversees the care, prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to all student-athletes.
  • Attend practice sessions and athletic contests and prepare athletes using protective techniques and devices as needed.
  • Provide emergency or continued care and refer athletes to physician for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
  • Detect and resolve risks to athletes and determine continued participation in athletic events.
  • Develop and establish specific procedures to be carried out in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Provide health care information and counsel and instruct student athletes on subject matter related to athletic training.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, medical and paramedical personnel, coaches, and other staff.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrators that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position
  • Manage and supervise sports medicine staff (including hiring, personnel review, certification, license and continuing education maintenance).
  • Organize and maintain all medical records in RankOne Sport, accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Develop and maintain emergency action plans for all permanent and temporary practice and competition venues in accordance with UIL guidelines and national and state regulations.
  • Coordinate planning and execution of UIL Sports Physicals.
  • Select, train, and supervise Student Athletic Training Aides.
  • Develop and maintain all department guidelines, policy and procedure in accordance with best practices and consensus statements.
  • Maintain an inventory of medical supplies and equipment. Requisition additional supplies as needed.
  • Maintains relationships with area University MSAT programs to provide preceptor shadowing opportunities as well as a pathway for Azle ISD students interested in opportunities with said Universities.
  • Maintain student-athlete insurance information.
  • Maintain good communication with the insurance providers and manages all paperwork required for claims.
  • Manage and oversee the Athletic Training Facility.
  • Communicate with physicians and coaching staff regarding the injury status of athletes.
  • Serve as medical point of contact for district athletic events.
  • Assists the Athletic Director and coaching staff in determining whether the athletic facility is in optimal and safe condition.
  • Assists the Athletic Director in confirming required coach trainings.
  • Helps monitor weather conditions and dangerous environments (humidity/lightning).
  • Ensures all coaches maintain First-Aid, CPR and AED certification.
