The creation of Allegheny Country Club was spurred by John Moorhead, Jr. The local steel magnate took up golf in 1893 while vacationing in Massachusetts and brought the game back to the Steel City by burying six pea cans in the infield of the Homewood racetrack. In 1895, Moorhead and a group of Allegheny City industrialists purchased 15 acres in their neighborhood. Allegheny Country Club officially opened its doors in 1895 with a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, and stables available to the membership.
